• Hugh, could you present us the nature of you project?

Our project is to set up a “free school”. Free schools are a new idea. The concept allows parents or other local groups to come up with a “vision” for school they would like to see in their area. The Department for Education will consider the proposal, and if they think it can work, they will give funding for it. We have to show that our school has broad support from the local community. It means that free schools respond to local needs and what families want to see. St. Marylebone C of E School is helping us with the technical aspects of our application.

• How the project came up and since when and why?

We have been working on this idea since before the summer. Several people came up with the same idea all at the same time. After several conversations along the lines of “the area needs a new school” a group of us decided to press ahead and make it happen. It’s generally recognised that parents are leaving the area when their children reach secondary school age. If you can’t afford to go private, there is very little choice about schooling. The problem is particularly acute for boys, as there are already two very good girls schools in Westminster.

• What curriculum do you plan to offer?

Our curriculum is “traditional” in the sense that we will concentrate on the core academic subjects – English, maths, history, geography, sciences, and modern languages. We will also teach Latin and Philosophy, which we believe promote clear thought and good syntax. We are much less interested in “vocational equivalents” to academic subjects subjects like “Sport Management” . Despite our focus on “traditional learning” we are also very interested in children using technology creatively to bring their creativity and academic work to life.

• Can you tell us what are the next steps for your project to succeed? What do you need?

We urgently need more signatures for our petition. If you live in London and have boys currently in years 4 and 5 at primary school, please sign our online petition at http://www.maryleboneschool.com and tell all your friends about us.

• What difficulties to you encounter?

This is the most difficult project of my life, so it is hard to know where to begin answering that question. We have to collect at least 240 signatures of support, but we really need many more to impress the Department for Education that there is demand for this school. We have to master the demanding technical aspects of how a school operates. We have find a site for the school – the Westminster Council is helping us with that.
